It has a built in door chime, and integrated speaker allowing you and the visitor to converse clearly without opening the door.  Bright illuminating LEDs allow for easy viewing at night and there is an adjustable viewing angle to see the vast majority of your front porch from the camera placement.  There is a two year manufacturer’s warranty on the product from NuTone.  This unit requires another unit for the inside of your door way to complete the system.

American Alarm Systems offers a similar functioning model for the same price, but it includes both the camera and the receiver so you do not have anything else to buy.  It is an infrared security camera, intercom system and a seven inch TFT color screen for the inside of your house.  The system can be expanded to include a second monitor and up to eight remote stations.  The door chime has eight chord melodies, an alarm and an electronic door unlock.  The camera comes in a fully waterproof, oxidation proof aluminum casing and offers hands free two way communication.  The alarm is extra protection to scare away unwanted visitors.

Appearance was another factor in keeping home intercom systems from becoming commonplace.  Home intercom systems with a radio and voice function many times were rather large and the décor of the day was a wood grain face plate.  How many people wanted a twelve by nine (12”x9”) box on their wall?  Each station was usually brown or almond so if your home was mostly white or neutral they would really stand out.  Wires over time would become corroded or the insulation would dry rot and short out and it was very difficult to repair them.

Even the master control station can be wireless.  If you do not want to make a big enough hole for the master station, you can buy a corded wireless control station for your wireless intercom system.  Of course, all of the satellite stations will be wireless as well.  All of the various wireless products have to have a power source and it is batteries.  Some wireless intercom systems use standard alkaline AA batteries while others use CR123 and other types of batteries normally found in the photo department at rather high prices.  Most all makers of wireless intercom systems have had their models meet Energy Star ratings so that the actual battery use is minimal unless under heavy use.

Aiphone is another communications company offering business intercom and access systems nationwide.  They offer simple intercom systems, intercom systems with music capability, music distribution systems and office access and door access systems.  You can get a simple voice access intercom system starting at under two hundred dollars ($148) and they have just about everything in between including color video and voice intercom systems starting at just under four hundred dollars ($386) and topping out at their deluxe Black and White Video/Access System at a little over two thousand dollars ($2503).  You can have up to three video door stations and eight inside audio or video stations.  From each station you can make an “all call” or you can make selective calls to any station in the system.  You can also unlock the doors from any station.  The system has fantastic audio and video clarity in both day and night.  The system also has a hands free answering feature by voice only.

The premise behind intercom systems was to take the system you saw in movies at gated mansions and bring it to the normal home owner who wanted a bit more security and privacy.  The home intercom system allows the home owner to question who is outside his door without having to put an unsightly peep hole for viewing the front porch.
